Biography – Julie Gregory
I’m Julie, an artist and maker living on the wild North Northumberland coast. The landscape here — its weathered shoreline, dramatic skies, changing light and restless sea — has always been at the heart of my work. With the Scottish border only a short drive away, I’m also continually drawn north to the West Coast of Scotland, its islands, lochs and mountains.
My work has always been led by curiosity and a love of experimenting with materials. I paint semi-abstract landscapes and florals in oils, acrylics and mixed media, building layers of colour, texture and mark-making to capture atmosphere rather than simply reproduce what I see.
More recently, that same way of working has found its way into my jewellery. I work intuitively with copper, reclaimed and vintage tin, lead-free soft solder, resin, sea glass and found materials, creating small, one-of-a-kind pieces that often feel somewhere between jewellery and wearable sculpture. I’m particularly drawn to irregular surfaces, tactile details, weathered finishes and the unexpected marks that happen during the making process.
Alongside painting and jewellery, I also work with textiles, including handwoven pieces made with richly textured fibres. Although the materials may change, the thread running through everything I make remains the same: colour, texture, atmosphere and a strong sense of place.
My work has been exhibited at events including the Edinburgh Art Fair and in London’s Brick Lane, and I was delighted to be featured by Coast Magazine as a “Coastal Character”.
Everything you see here has been created by me, in small numbers or as an individual one-off piece. I hope you enjoy exploring the work and perhaps find something that speaks to you.
